Introduction
교토 츠타야 서점(京都 蔦屋書店)은 국내 미술계에서 주목받고 있는 한국의 젊은 미술 작가 김서울, 이채원, 지희킴을 초대해 단체전 《블룸 비전 Bloom Vision》을 개최한다.
지난해 10월, 일본 교토 내 다카시마야 백화점에 새롭게 문을 연 츠타야 서점은 내부 곳곳에 전문적인 전시 공간을 갖추고 문화와 예술의 수도로 일컫는 교토 지역의 역사적 특성을 바탕으로 일본 전통문화와 최첨단의 동시대 예술이 공존하는 기획 프로그램을 선보이며 독자적인 문화예술 공간으로 거듭나고 있다.
특별히 이번 전시는 젊고 역량 있는 작가들을 발굴하고 조명해 온 국내 갤러리 디스위켄드룸(ThisWeekendRoom)과의 협력으로 진행되었으며, 서점 측은 최근 국제적 이목이 집중되고 있는 한국의 아트씬을 가까이에서 경험하고, 디지털과 아날로그 환경이 교차되는 시대를 통과한 80년대생 작가들이 어떻게 회화의 동시대적 가능성을 물리적, 개념적으로 실험하는지 관찰할 수 있는 기회라고 소개한다.
본 전시는 한국에서 평면 매체를 기반으로 왕성하게 작업 활동을 이어오고 있는 80년 대생 작가 김서울, 이채원, 지희킴의 작품을 소개한다. 세 작가는 모두 아날로그와 디지털 환경이 교차되는 시대를 통과하며 회화의 동시대적 가능성을 물리적, 개념적으로 실험한다. 특히 그들은 작품을 연작의 형태로 구성하여 일련의 회화가 특정한 서사 혹은 질문을 중심으로 연결되도록 설계해왔다.
김서울은 각 연작에서 회화의 역사를 만들어 온 여러 물리적, 개념적 틀을 해체하고 이를 자신만의 방법으로 재구성하는 실험을 이어간다. 전시에서 소개되는 <애프터 드 쿠닝>, <필버트 패밀리>, <스칼라 앤 벡터>는 각각 추상 회화의 언어, 이미지를 만들어내는 재료이자 단위로서 붓, 그리고 한정된 평면 안에서 조형 요소들 간의 힘의 배치를 치열하게 고민한 작가의 시간이자 감각을 대변하는 이미지이다.
이채원은 설원과 사막, 호수와 같은 자연을 배경으로 미지의 생명들이 피어나고 지는 장면을 구성해왔다. 공기조차 멈춘듯한 까만 밤 하늘 아래 서있는 눈 덮인 개체들은 유화 물감 특유의 텍스처와 다양한 백색의 음영을 입고 신비로운 자태를 하고 있다. 작가는 인터넷과 현실에서 발견한 자연의 신비한 모습들을 재구성하여 인간이 존재하기 이전 혹은 이후의 세계를 상상해낸다.
지희킴은 식물과 인간의 신체를 그리며, 한 개인이 공동체와 관계를 맺으며 마주치는 여러 감정의 편린들을 엮어 가상의 정원 연작을 이어왔다. 작가는 직접 식물원과 온라인 상에서 발견한 꽃과 풀의 이미지를 콜라주 하여 현실에 존재하지 않는 식물이 종이 위에서 자라나도록 한다. 분출하는 색의 스펙트럼 사이로 피어나는 생명들은 인간의 감정을 띤 이름을 가지고 관람객들의 감각 안으로 침투한다.
The exhibition entitled Bloom Vision, curated by ThisWeekendRoom from Seoul represents Chaewon Lee, Seoul Kim and Jihee Kim, who were born in the 1980s in Korea and have been actively working on the painting. Bloom Vision refers to the diverse perspectives of the three artists’ which have been delivered from reality to the abstract/transcendental views. All three artists experiment with the possibility of painting physically and conceptually, going through an era where analogue and digital environments intersect. In particular, they have created a series of works so that a bunch of works are connected to each other based on a specific narrative or question.
Seoul Kim continues the experiment of dismantling the various physical and conceptual frameworks that have made the history of painting and rebuilding them in his way. The three series shown at the exhibition are initiated by different topics; the method of abstract painting, the brush as the key components and unit for creating images, and the arrangement of formative elements. Each series are image that reflects the time and senses that the artist has been wrestling with the logic of the paintings.
Chaewon Lee composes scenes of unknown life blooming and falling against the background such as snowfields, deserts and lakes. Standing under the black night sky where even air seems to have stopped, the snow-covered creatures have a mysterious appearance in various white shades with the unique texture of oil paint. Lee reconstructs captivating aspects of nature found in the internet and reality to imagine the world before or after humans existed.
Jihee Kim has been drawing plants and human bodies, to construct a series of virtual gardens which symbolise emotions that occur within a human being’s mind. Kim collages particles of flowers and plants found in botanical gardens and online and creates ones that do not exist in reality. The creatures that bloom between the spectrum of vivid colours penetrate the senses of viewers with names with human emotions.
