Seoul Kim approaches painting as an ongoing process of fundamental questioning and response. His practice centers on investigating, at a meta level, how the physical constituents of painting such as brushes, pigment, canvas, stretcher, and frame operate within the medium. He has developed a series of works that engage with influential figures in art history, the standardized formats and designs of branded art materials, and the embodied, kinetic conditions of the act of painting itself. Each component gradually loosens from its original referent and is transformed into a tightly structured pictorial field articulated through the artist’s own visual language. Through this process, Kim reconsiders the historical references and conventions that have long underpinned visual art, constructing new frameworks through which painting can be rewritten in the present.
