About Artist
에밀 우르바넥은 흑연 덩어리를 체에 문질러 가루를 흩뿌리고, 그 위로 여러 겹의 색층을 쌓아 올려 검은 흔적들을 번지게 만드는 방식으로 이미지를 묘사한다. 작가에게 화면은 통념적 가치의 높낮이가 균형을 잃는 지대이자 은밀한 양태가 두루 환영받는 영역이다. 주로 화병과 유리잔, 그릇 같은 틀 안에 정체가 불분명한 대상들이 배치되는데, 각각의 요소는 독립적인 윤곽을 유지하면서도 서로의 표면과 실루엣을 공유한다. 무엇이 하나의 몸이고 어디서부터 다른 존재가 시작되는지 쉬이 구분되지 않는 장면을 통해, 그는 정체성이 확정되기 이전의 유동적 상태를 탐구한다.

Emil Urbanek creates images by building up multiple layers of color over traces of graphite powder sifted through a sieve, allowing the black marks to blur and spread across the surface. For the artist, the canvas becomes a space where conventional hierarchies of value lose their balance and ambiguous forms of existence are equally welcomed. Unidentifiable forms are often placed within vessels such as vases, glasses, and bowls. While each element retains its own contour, their surfaces and silhouettes overlap and merge with one another. Through scenes in which it is difficult to distinguish what constitutes a single body or where one entity begins and another ends, Urbanek explores fluid states of identity before they become fixed.
