Lucas Kaiser primarily uses dry materials such as pencils, colored pencils, and oil sticks to create multiple layers on paper. While materials that absorb the more precise pressure of the hand require a labor-intensive working process, they remain the most familiar and comfortable medium for the artist. The recurring theme in his work is the uncanniness that emerges from everyday objects. A labyrinthine painting that cleverly resembles a “find the hidden picture” games or world puzzles reflects the artist’s unique response to the flood of images in today’s world, resulting from his experimental deconstruction of the formal language of painting—shaped by cultural conventions—and its reconstruction into something more flexible.
