Introduction
Summer Sparks II: Ignite에서 선보이는 이번 프로젝트는 김서울 작가가 십여 년간 차례대로 진행해 온 회화 연작을 한 자리에 모은다. <After De Kooning>(2016-18), <Filbert Family>(2018-22), <Scalar and Vector>(2021-)로 이어지는 세 연작은 각 시리즈 안에서 작품이 완성된 순서대로 넘버링되며, 회화를 향한 작가의 진솔한 태도와 고민, 매체 실험의 시행착오를 여과 없이 반증한다. 미술 사조에 영향을 끼친 선대 작가, 브랜드 미술용품의 규격과 모양, 그리는 행위에 가해지는 운동성을 주제 삼은 각각의 작품은 시각 예술이 오랜 시간 빚져 온 역사적 참조와 관습을 재인식하고, 현재의 방식으로 다시 쓰기 위한 결과물이다. 김서울만의 독자적 해석이 담긴 빈틈없는 화면은 각 구성 요소의 필연적 쓰임과 비례에 따라 인상을 달리하지만, 궁극적으로 ‘기본’에 가닿고자 하는 그의 마음을 동반한다.
Summer Sparks II: Ignite brings together a decade-long sequence of painting series by Seoul Kim. After De Kooning(2016-18), Filbert Family(2018-22), Scalar and Vector(2021-) are numbered in the order they were completed, revealing the artist’s sincere engagement with painting and his ongoing process of experimentation. Referencing influential artists, the standardized forms of painting tools, and the physical momentum embedded in drawing, the series reconsiders the historical conventions of visual art through a contemporary lens. While the precisely structured compositions shift in atmosphere through the proportion and function of their elements, they ultimately reflect Seoul Kim’s enduring pursuit of the fundamentals.
