김재희는 이탈리아 라벤나와 밀라노에서 오랜 시간에 걸쳐 습득한 전통 모자이크의 방법론을 동시대 시각언어로 구현하는 데 천착한다. 각 작품은 엄격한 제작 방식에 의거하여 제작되지만, 이는 단순히 기술적 논리를 답습한 결과물에 그치지 않고 개인의 내적 정서를 발현시키는 매개가 된다. 특히 큰 타일 조각이 작게 부서지고 하나의 화면 위에서 다시금 서로 만나 새로운 질서를 찾아가는 과정은 일종의 회복과 치유의 행위로 볼 수 있다. 반짝이는 파편들은 명확한 형상을 제시하기를 잠시 유보한 채, 서로의 관계 속에서 각각의 위치와 존재의 의미를 찾아가는 개인들의 삶을 떠올리게 한다. 다양한 크기와 조건의 화면을 아우르는 그의 작업세계는 공예의 영역을 넘어 회화, 조각, 공공미술, 건축의 범주를 넘나드는 입체적인 언어가 된다.
Jaehee Kim focuses on translating the methodology of traditional mosaic acquired for a long time in Ravenna and Milano, Italy into contemporary visual language. Although each work is produced based on a strict production process, it becomes a medium for expressing an individual’s internal emotions, not just remaining as a result of following technical logic. In particular, the process of breaking large pieces of tile into small ones, assembling them again on one screen, and finding a new order can be seen as an act of recovery and healing. The sparkling pieces remind us of the lives of individuals who find their own positions and meanings of existence in each other’s relationships. Her works encompassing screens of various sizes and conditions becomes tactile language across the categories of painting, sculpture, public art, and architecture beyond the realm of craft.
