About Artist 국동완은 개인의 무의식을 통하여 연결되는 현실의 보편적인 이야기들에 주목해왔다. 꿈, 출산 등 그가 지나온 비언어적 시간의 편린들은 추상화된 문자와 응축된 기하학적 형상으로 치환된다. 그는 의식과 무의식, 자아와 타자 사이의 경계에서 수집한 장면과 인상들을 직물을 짜듯 엮어 풍경을 그려간다. 특히 그는 연속적인 의미의 기호들로 구성된 책의 형식을 빈번하게 차용한다. 그러나 이 책은 결코 일방적인 서사를 강요하지 않으며, 미완의 것으로 남아 누군가의 눈과 손을 통해 완성될 수 있는 상태를 유지한다. 따라서 타자의 시선은 보다 일상의 차원에 가까이 머무는 그의 작업 양식을 통해 작가의 삶의 내밀한 곳까지 닿을 수 있다.
Dongwan Kook investigates the general stories of reality connected through individual unconsciousness. The particles of nonverbal time passed by her, such as dreams and childbirth are replaced by abstracted characters and condensed geometric shapes. She draws a scenery by weaving scenes and impressions collected at the boundary between consciousness and unconsciousness, ego and others. Especially, she frequently borrows the format of a book composed of symbols in a continuous sense. However, this book never forces a single narrative and remains incomplete, so can be completed through someone’s eyes and hands. Therefore, the other’s gaze can reach the inner part of the artist’s life through his work style, which stays closer to the level of daily life.
