On one hand, the detailed shapes he paints by observing real-life optical phenomena or light objects attest to the physicality of the materials he stacks. On the other hand, his relief works, which utilize the tactile properties of the various materials that make up his paintings, create visual illusions within a given space, expanding the possibilities of the image’s existence. Hong’s world is cleverly positioned at the intersection between the three-dimensional state of mass and the two-dimensional weightlessness of space, in which the mass is dissolved. This creates an opportunity for the viewer to subvert their everyday beliefs and visual experience.
