최성임의 작업은 지극히 작고 사적인 것들이 집적되어 형성하는 조형적 감각을 기반으로 형성된다. 유년 시절, 육아, 집 내부의 환경, 가사 노동 등 현실의 차원에서 겪은 경험들은 함축적이고 추상적인 언어로 변환되어 관객들에게 새로운 감각을 전달한다. 굳건한 삶에 수반되는 강인한 정신과 또렷한 주체의 상태는 아슬아슬하게 바닥에 발을 딛고 선 기둥들로 치환되고, 사라지는 과거의 편린들은 임시로 공간을 점유하는 그물의 형태가 된다. 이처럼 일상의 소재들을 예술적 언어의 형식으로 전환하는 그의 작업 세계는 많은 이들에게 공감과 유대의 정서를 불러일으킨다.
Sungim Choi’s works are constructed based on a formative sense created by integrating extremely small and private things. Her experiences at the level of reality such as childhood, the environment inside the house or housework are converted into implied and abstract languages to convey new senses to the audience. The strong willpower and the clear state of subject accompanying a solid life are symbolised by pillars standing narrowly on the floor, and disappeared pieces of past are turned into the shape of a net woven temporarily occupying a space. In this way, her work which converts everyday material into forms of artistic language evokes empathy and bond emotion for many.
