About Artist 암스테르담을 기반으로 활동하는 리투아니아 작가 비타우타스 쿰자는 사진 매체가 지닌 다큐멘터리적 속성을 배반한다. 말하자면 특정 장면을 있는 그대로 포착하지 않고, 피사체의 쓰임과 비례를 왜곡하여 초현실적인 상황을 연출하는 식이다. 사방의 위계를 뒤집고 이질적 물성을 충돌시키는 작가의 무대는 의도적으로 조작된 픽션에 다름없다. 그에게 사진은 렌즈 너머 대상을 평면에 박제하는 결과물이 아니라 삼차원 공간으로의 개입을 위한 재료다. 이는 현대 사진가들이 잃어버린, 대상과의 직접적인 접촉을 회복하고 사진의 세계와 현실 세계를 결합하고자 함이다. 인화된 이미지와 실재하는 사물은 물리적으로 결합한 아상블라주적 성격을 띠며, 수집된 물건들은 본래의 기능과 달리 재조립됨으로써 전형적인 가치에서 벗어난다.
Amsterdam based Lithuanian artist Vytautas Kumža subverts photography’s documentary nature. Rather than capturing a specific scene as it is, he constructs surreal situations by distorting the scale, function, and proportion of his subjects. The artist’s stage, where spatial hierarchies are overturned and conflicting materialities collide, unfolds as a deliberately constructed fiction. For him, photography is not a medium that fixes reality onto a flat surface, but a material through which he intervenes in three dimensional space. This reflects a desire to recover direct contact with the object, something often lost in contemporary photography, and to merge the photographic realm with the real world. Printed images and physical objects are combined into assemblage like forms, where collected items are reconfigured beyond their original functions and familiar meanings.
